KUNAU, ROBERT T., JR., HAROLD L. WEBB, AND SUSAN C. BORMAN. Characteristics of sodium reabsorption in th loop of Henle and distal tubule. Am. J. Physiol. 227(5) : 1181-l 191. 1974.-This study was performed to define the characteristics of the relationship between sodium delivery to and sodium reabsorption in the superficial loop of Henle (loop segment) and distal convoluted tubule (distal segment). We chose to examine this relationship in three experimental groups : 1) when delivery was modestly increased with minimal changes in the extracellular fluid (ECF) volume; 11) when delivery was significantly increased in association with acute progressive isotonic ECF volume expansion; and 111) when delivery was significantly decreased by partial aortic constriction during progressive isotonic ECF volume expansion. In the loop segment, in all groups, absolute sodium reabsorption changed directly with sodium delivery, but the relationship between delivery and absolute reabsorption was such that fractional reabsorption varied in inverse proportion to sodium delivery. In group 1, the increases in delivery were minimal and absolute reabsorption in the distal segment paralleled delivery; fractional reabsorption remained constant. In groups II and III, absolute reabsorption varied directly but not proportionately with the large changes in delivery; fractional reabsorption therefore varied inversely to delivery.

Regulation by adrenal corticosteroids of sodium and potassium transport in loop of Henle and distal tubule of rat kidney.
Studies were conducted to examine the effects of adrenalectomy (ADX) and selective, physiological adrenal corticosteroid replacement on sodium and potassium transport by the superficial loop of Henle and distal tubule of rat kidney in vivo. In the loop of Henle, ADX inhibited sodium reabsorption by 33%. Whereas dexamethasone had no effect on reabsorption, aldosterone increased sodium transport ...
متن کاملEpithelial magnesium transport and regulation by the kidney.
Magnesium is the fourth most abundant cation in the body and the second most common cation in the intracellular fluid. It is the kidney that provides the most sensitive control for magnesium balance. About a 80% of the total serum magnesium is ultrafilterable through the glomerular membrane. In all of the mammalian species studied to date, the proximal tubule of the adult animal reabsorbs only ...
متن کاملLocalization of tubular adaptation to renal sodium loss in Gitelman syndrome.
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Gitelman syndrome (GS) is a salt-wasting tubulopathy that results from the inactivation of the human thiazide-sensitive sodium chloride cotransporter located in the distal convoluted tubule. Tubular adaptation to renal sodium loss has been described and localized in the distal tubule in experimental models of GS but not in humans with GS. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANT...
متن کاملEnhanced chloride reabsorption in the loop of Henle in Dahl salt-sensitive rats.
This study examines the nephron segments contributing to the blunted pressure-natriuretic response in Dahl salt-sensitive rats. Urine and late proximal and early distal tubular fluid samples were collected from 16-20-week-old, inbred Dahl salt-sensitive (DS/Jr) and salt-resistant (DR/Jr) rats, and Dahl salt-sensitive (DS) and salt-resistant (DR) rats from the Brookhaven colony, that were mainta...
متن کاملInfluence of morpholine on changes in kidney tissue and white blood cells of NMRI male Albino mice
Background: Morpholine is a toxic substance used in industry and agriculture and can be absorbed into the body through ingestion, inhalation, and the skin. The present study aimed to assess the effect of morpholine and physiological serum ingestion on qualitative and quantitative characteristics of white blood cells and kidney tissue of white male mice. Materials and Methods: In the present ...
